The Atacama desert has its own salt flats, Salar de Atacama, but you don't get the flat, tiled effect you get in Bolivia - these salt flats are all churned (something to do with chloride crusts being here rather than the sulphate crusts you get in Salar de Uyuni). This churned surface offers a little shade to small creatures, so we saw several lizards darting around. Damn hot, though.
