All of the Moai statues were felled in a civil war some time around the time of Captain Cook's first visit in 1770, and many of them have only been restored in the last 30 years.
There is no mystery about why they were created - they were built to represent their Gods. And we know how they were built - the main quarry is in the South East of the island, and has several Moai in varying states of completion. The mystery is how they were transported - these things are massive, about 7m tall, and weigh several tonnes.
These seven Moai are known as Ahu Akiri, and were restored in 1960. They are unique in that they face out to sea - all the rest face inland.
